One Homeschool Day August

One Homeschool Day August

We are still on our summer schedule here.  We usually don't start back with all the academic subjects until after Labor Day, and even then it takes a couple of weeks or so to add everything in.  This morning I woke up to this little cutie.  She was pretending to fly to the moon with her ballerina dress up outfit and pipe cleaners attached to my colander for her hat.

Adam had to check this hat out after she was finished.  I got breakfast and the older 2 girls meandered downstairs.  After we ate everyone got dressed and worked on some chores.

I put on a load of laundry and read Adam a Curious George book, 5 times in a row.

When Emily was finished she snuggled down to do some reading out of "The Friend", which is her favorite thing to read currently.  She excitedly waits every month for it to arrive.  My parents gave us a box full of old Friend magazines from when I was a child, and I am considering getting those out and sticking one in the mailbox for her every few days as a fun treat.

Shortly thereafter she joined Adam and Ashley playing play doh by the back door.

Alexis was off in the playroom reading and I was cleaning the stove.  Adam came over and stuck his sippy cup in one of the drawers it does not belong in.  He's in a very helpful stage right now where he likes to rearrange my drawers and cupboards.  He will take something out of one drawer, close the drawer, and then open another drawer and deposit the item and then close that drawer, leaving no trace.  It makes finding things interesting, indeed.

After I finished we gathered in the livingroom and did a little scripture study from the Book of Mormon.  We also read a history story about the Dead Sea Scrolls.

After that we headed outside to play and soak in some sun.

We took our book with us, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and read a couple of chapters on the back deck.  After that everyone scattered to play.  Alexis grabbed her Life of Fred Math book and did a chapter of of it.

Ashley picked a bunch of zucchini for us.

Emily's favorite pass time outside is her scooter.

Ashley and Adam took off exploring.

They took turns playing in the cozy coupe.

They played on swings.

We laid on a blanket for awhile and gazed up at the clear blue sky and talked about anything and everything.

After everyone started getting hot, we all headed inside to cool down with some lunch and a drink.  Then  we did our state for the day - New Jersey.  We located it on the map, read some interesting stories and facts, and the girls filled in their maps with the things that interested them the most.

After that is was naptime for Adam.  When I got finished nursing him to sleep I came out and found these two snuggled up.  Alexis was writing a modern day Cinderella story and Emily was reading it as she was writing.  This may have bothered Alexis slightly, but she handled it in good humor and they both kept giggling.

Ashley asked to play a little Wii game called Animal Crossing.

I worked on cleaning our basement a little bit.  It's a highly neglected area of our home that I have been trying to give attention to, slowly.  I also relaxed some and browsed online, trying to finalize curriculum needs for the next few months.  After a while I grabbed Emily and Ashley and we finished up reading about Saturn.  The end experiment was making a rocket out of a film canister and construction paper.  Alexis decided she wanted in on it, too so the all three designed simple rockets and when Adam woke up we headed outside to launch them.  They didn't work very well, but they still had fun with them.

After that we were all hot, so we headed into the pool for a refreshing swim.

Adam started getting whiny and fussy so I took him in and changed him.  Before I could get his pajamas snapped he grabbed a book and sat there babbling in such an expressive voice with a few words I could understand tossed in here and there, as he pointed to each page.  He had almost zero interest in books his first year (complete opposite of his big sisters) and then soon after turning one he did a complete 180 and now it's one of his favorite things to do.

The girls came in soon after that and everyone changed into PJs and helped get dinner on the table.  After dinner we put on our clean up playlist on youtube and everyone pitched in to do dishes, sweep floors, and clean up messes like this:

After everything was tidy Emily and Ashley scrambled to the playroom to finish playing a game of school with some dolls.  Alexis played some piano and Adam danced while she was playing.  At 7:30 we called Daddy (who is a pilot and off flying this day) to read scriptures, sing our nightly hymn, and say family prayer.  I read stories and sang lullabies to Ashley and Adam and got them tucked in and then Alexis, Emily, and I watched a bit of Dick Van Dyke before heading to bed.

Magic Show

Another magic show at our house.  We're lucky to get treated to these fairly regularly.  In this show Emily was the head magician and Ashley was the assistant.  It was mystifying and adorable, as always.

Frozen Night

Tonight we were going to take the kids to a Frozen celebration at Dawes Arboretum.  There was supposed to be activities and ice cream all centered around Frozen.  We piled into the car and drove towards Dawes.  About a 1/2 mile before we got there we got into a huge traffic jam.  We were barely moving and standing completely still most of the time.  It didn't take too long before we figured out that this was the line to get into Dawes.  No thank you.  So we turned around and headed home.  We decided instead to hold our own Frozen celebration.  So we popped popcorn and put on "Frozen".  Ashley put together costumes for everyone and assigned everyone parts and we all made paper snowflakes and hung them all around the living room.  We all agreed it was a fun evening and the kids weren't disappointed at all that they missed the Dawes activity.  We are sure blessed with such sweet, go with flow, flexible children.

Sweet, Sleepy Cuddles

Daddy rocked and sang to this sleepy baby boy today and held him for his afternoon nap.  Holding  and cuddling with sleeping babies is one of his favorite things to do.

The Wilds

We took a little day trip to the Wilds as a family.  Our cousins Morgan and Grace came along, as well.  We rode an open Safari and got to see many neat animals up close, including zebras and giraffes - a couple of favorites around here.  After our safari tour we all went out to eat at Golden Coral for dinner.

Sunday Shaving

After church Don gave Adam a little shaving sampler he picked up in a hotel.  Of course he didn't know what to do with it so Don squirted out the shaving cream for him.  He was hesitant at first but quickly got into playing with it.  It wasn't long before we had a big mess and a happy baby.

Riding her Tricycle

She's starting to ask to learn to ride a two wheeler so I won't have very more pictures of this little one on her tricycle.  She rides it all around, playing all sorts of make believe games, giving her dolls and stuffed animals rides.  We just love this little girl.

Evening at the Circus

A small, traveling circus came to town, complete with a big top tent, elephants, clowns, and acrobats.  So we decided to take the kids.  It was HOT.  The tent held the heat in well, so we were sweltering.  Despite the heat, though, we had a great time.  I wasn't sure how interested Adam would be but he LOVED it.  He clapped his little hands and watched intently for almost the entire show.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and the day after the show, Ashley put on a circus show for us, reminiscent of the various acts we had seen.  It was very cute.
